You may think that a detailed piece of reporting about the sinking of a container ship in the Atlantic ocean isn't your cup of tea, but I can almost guarantee that you will find this both fascinating and tremendously suspenseful, even though Slade tells you on the first page how it ends. I was disinclined to read this when it first came out, but picked it up on a whim shortly after its paperback release, plowed through it in a day. I passed it to my daughter, who insisted her father read it, who insisted our son read it, too. All four of us, aged 20-54, each with diverse interests, were transfixed by Slade's telling of a story that was but a blip in the news on the day it occurred.

Definitely one of my favorite books of all time. Vanhoenacker, a 747 pilot with a PhD in history, muses on all matter of flight related subjects, from what it means to rise for a morning run in Cape Town and finish the day with a nightcap in Manhattan, to the design of galley rubbish bins. He does so with an infectious curiosity and appetite for meaning, not to mention beautiful prose. Skyfaring is fascinating and thought provoking and moving and I think everyone with even a shred of wonder for how humans have come to navigate this planet should read it.
