Middlebury native Leslie Smith (daughter of Gail Smith and the late Harvey Smith) will join us for our May first Tuesday at Ilsley Public Library to talk about her recently published memoir: Spitfire: A Story of Adversity, Acceptance & Resurrection. In looping chapters that read like an ongoing conversation with a close friend, Smith tells of her experience being diagnosed with Myotonic Muscular Dystrophy after years of mysterious fatigue, the loss of her father to the same illness, and her brother's struggle with it, too. She writes with bracing honesty about the strain on her marriage, the personal growth her disability demanded, and the sport that gave her hope for a life that, if only in some small way, resembles the one she'd dreamed of. I devoured Spitfire over the course of a single winter afternoon and was deeply moved by Smith's story and her willingness to share it widely.
This event will be available to join live on Zoom. Link below. We will also record it and make it available on the Ilsley Library YouTube channel.
