Book Release Event
Thursday, September 22, 7 p.m.
Jack Mayer, author of Life in a Jar: The Irena Sendler Project, will present a talk, “Weimar Germany and the Rise of the Third Reich” featuring his new book, Before the Court of Heaven.
Mayer's "new novel is the story of Ernst Techow, a young German who comes of age after the First World War and is swept up in the right-wing cause that will lead eventually to Hitler's reign. It is a fascinating look at the forces and influences - social and political - which affect the actions and decisions of supposedly rational people to rationalize unthinkable acts. Ernst is recruited as an assassin. After participating in the killing of an important pro-democracy official he is sentenced to prison. A mysterious fellow prisoner helps him to see that he has been used and that perhaps he might find a way to atone for the wrong that he has done. This is also the love story of Ernst and Lisa and how they must struggle against the horrible upheavals of war. An engaging historical novel, Before the Court of Heaven is exciting, informative, romantic and a very enjoyable read."
