January is here, and with it the annual movement of self-improvement. Some people swear off sweets, others commit to exercise regimens, and a growing number are adopting "Dry January." You needn't have started on January 1; any 30-days will do. I decided a year ago this past November that I needed to change my relationship with alcohol. I'd long had (and still have) a strong aversion to twelve-step programs, (i.e., the disease model, and total abstinence) and without many other options available, I turned to books. Well, to be honest, I turned first to podcasts, which led to a number of books. First among them was Annie Grace's This Naked Mind, which I found to be a treasure trove of motivating facts and supportive messages. It tops my list and you'll always find it on the shelf in our Personal Wellness section. The titles that follow are some others that I thnk strike the right balance between prescriptive and profound. I've made some notes about each one.
