When you walk into a chain bookstore, the first books you are going to see are the ones that the publisher is paying them to display. Not so at The Vermont Book Shop. While we can take advantage of "co-op" and be remunerated (compensated? bribed?) for placing certain books at the front of the store or in our newsletter, we never rely on it as a sole criterion for placement. Instead, we buy, feature, and recommend the books that we think have merit and will appeal to our unique market. We're not as disciplined as we should be about writing "shelf-talkers," but ask any one of us and we'll have an opinion to share with you about something we've recently read.

Below is a taste of our taste.

This is the title that will propel the Indie movement. In it, Ripton resident and Middlebury College Scholar-in-Residence argues that our purchases need NOT be at odds with our values, that by nurturing the essential humanity of our economy we may recapture our own. He makes the case that we can pursue a more sustainable prosperity by producing more of our own food, generating more of our own energy and creating more of our own culture and entertainment.

Carol says:
"An old favorite with a new look. Curl up and have a good chortle."

The publisher says:
"Since its publication in October of 1930, this classic spoof on textbook history has sold four million copies worldwide and has itself become a part of humor history. This anniversary edition is a celebration of this uproarious satire's lingering appeal and is enhanced by brilliant new drawings by cartoonist Stephen Appleby."

Recommended by Grant & Skylar: "The fact is, the whole of Australia despises my father more than any other man, just as they adore my uncle more than any other man. I might as well set the story straight about both of them . . ." Heroes or Criminals? Crackpots or Visionaries? Families or Enemies? ." . . Anyway, you know how it is. Every family has a story like this one." Most of his life, Jasper Dean couldn't decide whether to pity, hate, love, or murder his certifiably paranoid father, Martin, a man who overanalyzed anything and everything and imparted his self-garnered wisdom to his only son. But now that Martin is dead, Jasper can fully reflect on the crackpot who raised him in intellectual captivity, and what he realizes is that, for all its lunacy, theirs was a grand adventure. As he recollects the events that led to his father's demise, Jasper recounts a boyhood of outrageous schemes and shocking discoveries--about his infamous outlaw uncle Terry, his mysteriously absent European mother, and Martin's constant losing battle to make a lasting mark on the world he so disdains. It's a story that takes them from the Australian bush to the cafes of bohemian Paris, from the Thai jungle to strip clubs, asylums, labyrinths, and criminal lairs, and from the highs of first love to the lows of failed ambition. The result is a rollicking rollercoaster ride from obscurity to infamy, and the moving, memorable story of a father and son whose spiritual symmetry transcends all their many shortcomings. "A Fraction of the Whole" is an uproarious indictment of the modern world and its mores and the epic debut of the blisteringly funny and talented Steve Toltz.

Louise is a big fan of this one! With the same wicked humor and delicious charm that have won her millions of devoted fans, Sophie Kinsella, author of the #1 "New York Times" bestseller Shopaholic &Baby, returns with an irresistible new novel and a fresh new heroine who finds herself in a life-changing and utterly hilarious predicament.... When twenty-eight-year-old Lexi Smart wakes up in a London hospital, she's in for a big surprise. Her teeth are perfect. Her body is toned. Her handbag is Vuitton. Having survived a car accident--in a Mercedes no less--Lexi has lost a big chunk of her memory, three years to be exact, and she's about to find out just how much things have changed. Somehow Lexi went from a twenty-five-year-old working girl to a corporate big shot with a sleek new loft, a personal assistant, a carb-free diet, and a set of glamorous new friends. And who is this gorgeous husband--who also happens to be a multimillionaire? With her mind still stuck three years in reverse, Lexi greets this brave new world determined to be the person she...well, seems to be. That is, until an adorably disheveled architect drops the biggest bombshell of all. Suddenly Lexi is scrambling to catch her balance. Her new life, it turns out, comes complete with secrets, schemes, and intrigue. How on earth did all this happen? Will she ever remember? And what will happen when she does?
