Northern Woodlands is my favorite magazine. Although it is primarily aimed at forestry and lumber people, it is filled with fascinating articles and sidebars about the nature and ecology of New England forestlands. Stephen Long, the editor of Northern Woodlands, has compiled MORE THAN A WOODLOT as a guide for owners of large or small properties to steward their woods for profit, biodiversity and/or enjoyment. It is great reading, even for those of us who don't own forests.

If you haven't read any of Lee Child's Jack Reacher novels you are missing some great action fiction. His newest, THE AFFAIR, goes back to Reacher's past to tell us how and why Jack left the service and came to be the nomadic hero in all of his exploits.

THE THOUSAND AUTUMNS OF JACOB DE ZOET by David Mitchell is now in paperback.In the year 1799 Jacob signs on as a clerk with the Dutch East Indies Company which has been allowed very limited access to Japan's foreign trade. THE GREAT NORTHERN EXPRESS, favorite Vermont author Howard Mosher's latest book, is the story of his cross-country book tour. The hilarious and poignant encounters with potential book buyers, fellow voyagers, and motel denizens as he limps his ancient car and aging body from bookstore to bookstore are as entertaining as always.
